Are You Struggling in Business? Focus on Alignment!

Sometimes in business we can feel stuck and like nothing will ever change. Like nothing you try is working in your business. It may be an alignment problem.

What do you I mean?

Let me tell you a personal story. In my married life, there were some misplaced priorities that prevented me from reaching the goals I had set for myself. Because our marriage was out of balance and we had stopped putting Christ in the midst of it, this spun off into our businesses. Everything was dried up. We experienced failure after failure.

At the core, when you peel away the layer of this onion, it’s because we trusted in money, not God. We believed we were slaves, not heirs, and we took on burdens that were not ours to hold. In addition, we did not ask for help but instead tried to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps.

Our lives were spinning out of control, all because the foundation was sinking. We were building our household on a lie.

So God, being the loving Father He is, would not bless us. Since we were stingy with each other, others were stingy with us.

Being a work at home mom or dad is a journey of faith. When we replace that faith with trying to do it all on our own or working out of desperation, joy is sucked out of us. We burn out quickly. Frustration ensues and we can’t seem to make those breakthroughs that we so keenly need.

But when we are in alignment, with Christ, in our marriage and in our family, we have joy, energy, love, and confidence. We stop swimming against the tide, but instead wait for God as He tells us what the next step is and how to complete it.

We begin to dig deep and rely on the Holy Spirit. To depend on Him.
It’s so easy to put off happiness until we get that perfect pot of gold we are seeking. For instance, saying you will be happy when you lose 50 pounds, or you will be happy when you make a certain quota in your business. In our case, we put off getaways and dates because we had to work and we couldn’t “afford” it. In effect, we put off loving each other and as a result we almost lost everything we had, including our marriage.

But the truth is, a marriage counselor, or even worse, a divorce lawyer—is much more expensive than regular outings together! Keeping a balance in devotion to God, marriage, family, and building a brand is so important.

To be successful, we have to stop compartmentalizing our lives. When we live whole and free and motivated by inspired action with a heart full of dependence upon the Holy Spirit, we are able to build with joy and then we will experience results.

6 Myths Uncovered About Running a Successful Business

internet entrepreneur

Running a successful business. It can look easy, kind of like an ice skater effortlessly gliding on the ice.

But here’s the truth. For every successful business owner there is a story of pain, sweat, and tears.

There’s a saying: it took me 10 years to become an overnight success.

You see, we only see the moment when a successful brand or business is a success. We don’t see the years of hardship that proceeded the success.

I think of Tom Selleck. After he landed the role of Magnum, he spent that first year in Hawaii getting any odd job he could because the success of the TV show hadn’t happened yet.

So what are the myths? Here’s some ideas to give you another perspective.

1) Running a business is easy.

No. no. No. No. I am speaking from experience. There are late hours, tons of risks, setbacks, discouragement. Times when a business owner wants to throw in the towel.

2) Business owners are wealthy.

No. no. No. no. Most business owners do not start out wealthy. They risk everything for the HOPE of seeing their business dreams come true. And business owners when they do have a breakthrough pay lots of taxes. This can be a struggle.

3) Business owners are perfect.

No. No. No. no. Business owners make mistake and they are human.

4) Business owners don’t have a life.

No. no. No. No. Business owners usually have families and hobbies and interests.

5) Business owners always wear suits and ties.

No. no. no. No. Business owners come in many forms. Plumbers, Landscapers, Architects, Hairdressers. Dog trainers. Coaches. Playwriters. Authors. They don’t all wear a tie!

6) Business owners are selfish.

No. No. No. no. They are usually deeply committed to their communities and supportive of their employees.

I hope this brings you a different perspective of business owners and that running a business is not easy. If you are a business owner or an aspiring one, I hope this encourages you that you too can build your business, build your brand, and build it to success!

Want A Thriving Business? Focus On Alignment!

branding success

Perhaps your business is stuck and you feel like you’re going nowhere fast. It may be that you are out of alignment.

What in the world does that mean?

Here’s a personal story. In my married life years ago, there were misplaced priorities that prevented me from reaching my goals and the goals we had as a family. The reason? Our marriage was out of balance and we had stopped putting Christ in the midst of it, which spun off into our businesses.

Everything was dried up. We experienced failure after failure.

When you peel away the layer of this onion, you find at its core it was because we trusted in money, not God. We believed we were slaves, not heirs, and we took on burdens that were not ours to hold. In addition, we did not ask for help but instead tried to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. At the heart of it, I didn’t trust that God cared for me or that I mattered.

Our lives were spinning out of control, all because the foundation was sinking. We were building our household on a lie.

So God, being the loving Father He is, would not bless us. Since we were stingy with each other, others were stingy with us. Since I didn’t believe in myself, I communicated that unconsciously without meaning to.

Being a small business owner is a journey of faith. When we replace that faith with trying to do it all on our own or working out of desperation, joy is sucked out of us. We burn out quickly. Frustration ensues and we can’t seem to make those breakthroughs that we so keenly need. Burdens pile on and on and on.

But when we are in alignment, with Christ, in our marriage and in our family, we have joy, energy, love, and confidence. We stop swimming against the tide, but instead wait for God as He tells us what the next step is and how to complete it. We realize that our job is to plant seeds and His job is to produce the harvest.

But the truth is, a marriage counselor or even worse a divorce lawyer is much more expensive than regular outings together! Keeping a balance in devotion to God, marriage, family, and building a brand is so important.

To be successful, we have to stop compartmentalizing our lives. That’s the beauty of entrepreneurialism. When we live whole and free and motivated by inspired action, we are able to build with joy and then we will experience results.

That is the epitome of branding success!

Simple Ideas to Write Taglines

As a work at home business owner, a tagline or slogan is no less important than a big-time corporate office.

Why is that? Because it gives a clear message why you are in business and what your business does for its customers. As the saying goes, brevity is the soul of wit. As a society, we are used to sound bites and the Internet is a noisy place, full of competition. You need to make a sound bite for yourself!

This is especially important in networking and social media. It’s an opportunity for you to introduce yourself, to stand out.

What does a slogan do? It helps your prospects understand better what product or service you provide and if the tagline is memorable, will keep your business in the forefront of their minds. This means when they have a need for your particular product or service, they will think of you and be more likely to contact you.

So how exactly do you write a tagline?

Think through the question most often asked in social circles, “What do you do?” What is your 60 second response? This is often called an elevator speech. Now cut that speech in half. Then cut it to 10 seconds. Can you get your message across in that amount of time and is it memorable?

Alliteration is a useful tool when it comes to writing slogans and taglines. So is humor, as long as it is tasteful and fits with your business. In networking groups I’ve been involved in, a couple of the ladies share some funny taglines that make people laugh. Often they rhyme. These are memorable for sure!

Using keyword research can be invaluable. After all, you want to make sure people online find you! This was the main method that my husband and I used when creating his tagline, “Safeguarding lives through strong and robust building design.” Building design was our main keyword. We also wanted to make sure his personality came through when writing the tagline. Because it shows what makes him different from other architects.
You want to also make sure your slogan is results-oriented. What benefit does your customer get from working with you or purchasing your product?

Here’s the main advantage of writing a tagline or slogan: It helps distinguish you and your business from the competition. It can brand you as an expert. Like my husband’s tagline shows that he is an expert in strong building design. That is a very unusual specialty and he is capitalizing on it through his slogan!

Do the same for your work at home business and you will experience branding success!

A Classic Soap Story From the Great Depression…

business during coronavirus

It seems to me with the coronavirus crisis we business owners find ourselves in, one of my favorite stories would be a good one to retell… so here goes…

During the Great Depression, there were two soap companies.

One stopped stocking products and pulled their advertising.

The other decided to use a new platform–radio. They combined radio with storytelling.

This soap company would produce radio theater plays that centered around a character named Ma Barker. It was all centered around the drama in her life.

And then the soap company would have commercials.

They invested in this new platform and they increased their advertising.

Which soap company survived the Great Depression?

The one that made the dramas of course!

And what was that soap company called?

Tide!

And they created what is now called Soap Operas!

So how can you learn from this time in history?

Don’t shut down in the midst of this economic hardship. Be strategic and find ways to combine storytelling and this incredible medium we have now called the Internet!

You can take any service you sell and turn it into a product online.

Are you a financial planner? Create a video course.

Are you a fitness coach? Create a customized workout program via Skype.

Are you a coach for local business owners? Create ebooks and video courses. Then you can mentor business owners not only in your own city but across the country and even the world!

Most of all, don’t let fear overtake you. Move forward in faith and get creative. Invest in your business and it WILL pay off!

Job Vs. Self-Employment: Which is Better Especially with Coronavirus?

working during coronavirus

In recent times, employment was something to be counted on. After college graduation, you could expect to get hired by a company, move up in the ranks, get benefits, and 30 or 40 years later retire comfortably.

Like my Dad, who graduated from college in 1960, had a long career in both the Air Force and the aerospace industry, getting his masters and doctorate along the way, and retiring in 1999. He is now living the dream of fishing, travel, and skiing when and where he wants to.

But times have changed. Graduates can no longer expect to work for one company and one company only.

And in this last month, record unemployment has rocked the country. Those who are self-employed and work at home already have an advantage already.

So what are some other reasons employment has changed?

Why?
• Loyalty between employer and employee is virtually nonexistent.
• The lingering attitude of cutting back from the last recession.
• The healthcare law means insurance is more expensive.
• Uncertainty and instability in the marketplace has led to high unemployment, especially with the Coronavirus.

For our family, these changes have meant a radical departure from plans we had made at the beginning of our marriage. We took it for granted that my husband would always work for someone else. He didn’t seem like the entrepreneur type. While it was always my goal, it didn’t enter our minds that he would do the same.

Then the economy collapsed in 2008. No pay raise, delayed paychecks, and very little opportunity for growth led us to the conclusion that he needed to be self-employed full time.

We are actually quite excited about it. Because while the career job may have gone by the wayside, we recognize that true prosperity can’t be built on one. We like to call it the “Just Over Broke.” We are excited for the possibilities ahead as he builds his business. And we are excited to prepare our son to have the option of self-employment when he is ready to launch out on his own.

This strategy has proved vital for our family in the wake of the Coronavirus crisis. We had already been working at home. My business is mostly online. And even our local programs could be transferred to online. Travis works mostly from home and as an essential business in construction, he is still able to operate.

The old way of having a life-time job has all but disappeared. But this brings new opportunities. Yes, even the Coronavirus crisis brings new opportunities.

It means that we as families can go back to an even OLDER way of making a living, that of having cottage industries. It means that we can build family economies with several streams of income. It means that we can prepare our son for this eventuality so he is equipped to raise his family, truly living in freedom from debt and most importantly, has the freedom to raise his family the best way he can.

And it means that it’s more important than ever to get your message out there because people need your perspective!

Are you ready to take the next step into self-employment? Tune in for an announcement soon about a new free challenge coming up after Easter!

Thriving in the Midst of the Coronavirus

coronavirus

The coronavirus has and continues to be a destructive force for small business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s scary and devastating what is happening all over the country and all over the world.

But through this I have learned it’s not time to shrink back. It’s time to double down and re-strategize and get yourself out there in new ways. It’s time to take advantage of the power of the Internet and think outside of the box.

You may be–and I don’t blame you–extremely stressed and depressed and even might be wanting to throw in the towel.

Before you do, consider these 15 questions:

  1. What is your life and business about? Living a great life or loving a great God? (From Freedom From Emotional Eating by Barb Raveling)
  2. Why did you get into business in the first place?
  3. Do you need to pull back and rebuild?
  4. What is working? What is not working?
  5. What is God trying to teach you through this difficult time?
  6. Where is He in the midst of it and what is He saying to you?
  7. Do you have a strategic marketing plan or are you just throwing promotions at the wall, hoping they will stick?
  8. Are you communicating your value to your target market?
  9. Do you even HAVE a target market?
  10. Do you need to gain more skills or knowledge?
  11. Is fear holding you back?
  12. Do you believe that what you have to offer has value? Is there a feeling that you do not have value so is this self-doubt sabotaging your efforts?
  13. Do you have clear branding?
  14. Do you need help? Are you trying to carry the load all by yourself?
  15. What is God calling you to do?
  16. What is the next action step that you can do?

So when you are in that lonely place as a business owner—of crushing defeat which leads you to want to give up—truly contemplate the answers to these questions. You might just find that taking action on some of these questions will be just the thing you need to get off that treadmill of hopelessness caused by little progress and this coronavirus situation.

5 Golden Rules of Target Marketing

target marketing

You want new customers. You NEED new customers as it’s the lifeblood of your business growth. And as you plan for 2020 and beyond, it’s going to be the number one difference maker in all that you do.

So how can you attain new clients, and even more importantly, how can you RETAIN current customers?
Here’s my 5 golden rules of customer attraction and retainment:

  1. Know thy audience.

  2. Listen to your audience.
  3.
Know what their pain is.

  4. Know what they are afraid of losing

  5. Provide your audience solutions

Market research is key in being able to reach your chosen target market. How are you going to reach them if you don’t know what they like and what they don’t like? How will you find them if you don’t know where they are? How will you even know if they need what you offer unless you have thoroughly investigated their needs, wants, and desires?

This leads to listening to your audience. When you take the time to really understand where your target market is coming from, you will be able to serve them better. When you are dealing with a prospect or current customer, listening is key to increasing a trusted relationship. Really grasping what a customer wants takes putting ego aside and listening with your heart as well as with your mind.

When you listen to your audience, you can now begin to understand what their pain is. This is key in communicating to your prospects and customers. Your marketing will be vastly improved because you now can tailor your message to the pain your specific target market experiences. This will draw them in and attract them to you.

Pain usually involves a fear of loss. As you listen to your audience and understand their pain, you will also learn what it is they fear losing.

This is incredibly important when it comes to marketing your products or services to your target market. When you know what they fear losing, then you will understand what they are desperate for. This will aid you in your quest to serve more people in your target market because they will be coming to you!

But don’t leave it at that! What do they have to GAIN? Write or speak a vision for them: where are they now and where do they want to be?

The last golden rule is to provide your target market solutions to their pain and fear of loss. To provide a path for your target market to get to where they want to be. When you provide them these solutions, your marketing efforts will be much more effective.

This is truly attraction marketing. You know your audience, you have listened to them, you understand their pain and their fear of loss, and now you are providing a solution.

This means that your marketing message will bring more customers to you and that will improve your bottom line! Now that is truly seven golden rules to live by!

Analyzing this into a formal business and marketing plan is a crucial step for you!
