How to Make Brochures–Graphic Design Secrets that Will Make Your Brochure Sizzle!

So you’re thinking about making a brochure for your business. But how do you make brochures? And even more important, how do you make an effective brochure?

Basically, there are six stages of producing brochures:

  1. Initial Concept
  2. Writing
  3. Editing
  4. Designing
  5. Production
  6. Distribution

Fundamentally, brochures need to arouse attention and get interest. They need to motivate an audience toward an action.

You need to know your audience well. What is their age, location, income, family status, industry involved, job title/function, education level, political orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin?
Knowing all these things, think through what they really care about. What is important to them? What problems do they have? What are their fears, especially what are they afraid of losing?
Talk to your audience in terms of needs. What’s the problem? How can you meet that? Get benefits across to your audience. What solutions are you offering them?
Here’s some other ideas to help you create an effective brochure:

  • Use conversational tone “You”
  • Get message across in 20 seconds.
  • Make sure visuals work for you, that they illustrate a selling point.
  • Ask for action, make sure it’s easy to respond.
  • Use Business Reply Envelopes or include a custom domain name.

Additionally, ask these questions:

  • What is the purpose of your brochure?
  • Who is your audience?
  • What is your desired accomplishment?

Be sure to use graphic design elements:

  • Type
  • Graphics
  • Color of paper
  • Contrast and balance between dark and light
  • Balance between color and white space
  • Ink color
  • Contrast in type
  • Be consistent. This creates unity
  • Don’t use too much copy
  • Headlines are essential!

Follow these guidelines and you will have a brochure that sizzles!

Print design ideas—So is print design obsolete?

In this age of Internet marketing, you may be wondering, is print design dead? Well, let me ask you these questions?

What role did, if any, will print design play in the 2012 election?
How does print design help businesses? Churches? Charities? Artists?
But with everything going “green” why even care? Why is it important?

Here’s my opinion as a graphic artist for over 17 years:

Print design is timeless. There is something about holding paper that is so much more enjoyable and has a different effect than just an ebook or website or film.

What are some examples of where you see print design?

  • Direct marketing
  • Product design
  • CD/DVD packaging
  • Books
  • Newsletters/magazines
  • Greeting cards

Think about it. When it’s your birthday, would you rather receive an email or a card in the mail?

Even when a product is an ebook, like curriculum, there is still design to it. Or there can be to distinguish yourself above most ebooks out there, all created in Microsoft Word.

Think about Web designers. Some Web designers might be good at writing HTML code, but know nothing about design principles. Then there are web designers who know nothing about code!

Professional design stands out above the crowd, especially in these days when EVERYBODY thinks they are a graphic designer!

When you learn how to create unique designs that stand out and scream professionalism, you become more successful at reaching whatever your goal is for that project. It’s the difference between a professionally designed website and a canned website.

Or a professionally designed brochure and a brochure made from a template. It’s also the difference between having a bland brand and a brand that SIZZLES!

Find Your Brand–Why Start-Up Companies Need to Do More than Put a Pretty Logo Up!

The long-term benefits of knowing your why and having a clear life and business goal will bring you out of the endless cycle of going nowhere and will result in a transformation of life and business. It will give you wisdom and direction. It will also bring you true hope for your future. Plus, you will be modeling this attitude of success and achievement for your children. You will be giving them the tools they need to succeed, no matter what the job outlook is when they graduate.

Unmasking your authentic identity takes some work, yes, but the work is well worth the investment and time. It takes time to make something of lasting value—nine months for a baby, for instance…

Because when you take your business seriously, your prospects will take your business seriously. And then you will have a life and business that truly sizzles!

The Netflix Fiasco–Why Listening to Your Customers Is So Important

Today I read an interesting article about Netflix and how they’ve lost 800,000 customers. More than likely you are aware of this fiasco made by the CEO of one of the biggest video rental companies in the US.

The CEO decided to split their product in two and raise their prices. This caused a great deal of anger with their customer base, and as a result, many of them dropped the service.

From what I have read, I understand that the CEO decided to do this without any market research. He did not listen to his customers at all but arrogantly decided to make this decision.

Now Netflix is admitting their mistake and doing damage control. I don’t know what the outcome will be, but as a Netflix customer myself, I hope they get it straightened out soon!

This fiasco made by Netflix underscores the importance of listening to your prospects and customers. It’s so important to have your ear to the ground and know your audience. Making arrogant decisions just because you have the power as the business owner may result in loss of market share!

So listen to your customer. Do market research. Get to know your audience.

Steve Jobs–Remembering Apple’s Visionary Founder

Earlier today, I was shocked to learn that Apple’s founder Steve Jobs died. I had talked about him very recently in my Brand Identity Quest webinars. He has had a huge influence on my life!

In fact, I would not have become a graphic designer without him!

When I was a high school student, I was the editor of the entertainment page and had to design it the old fashioned way, with galleys. It was horrible.

But Apple started to make it’s way in my life during my senior year and I must confess, at first I scoffed along with the rest of my family. Our school paper got an Apple IIe and started to print the galleys ourselves on a Daisy Wheel printer. I’ll tell you, it was awful! But it saved the school a lot of money.

But this experience turned me off graphic design work. I was a writer and wanted to work for a magazine.

Then fast forward a few years later in college as a journalism student. In our production class, the school had just switched to IBM computers with the PageMaker desktop publishing program. I made a brochure on this program and found that I had a natural eye for design.

Then I started a Christian arts anthology. In my spare time, I would go to the computer science lab and work on the Macintosh SE/30s. I found that PageMaker worked faster and easier on a Mac. After two issues of my anthology, I was hooked!

After college, I wanted to learn how to design on a Mac. I turned down jobs that were on PCs. Yes, everyone thought I was crazy!

Then my big break came! An editorial assistant job at The Navigators. This eventually turned into a full-time graphic design job after being mentored by the art director, Mike Hames. This happened because I had the vision to start the anthology in college, which forced me to learn about graphic design and showed off my potential in this area. Mike taught me everything he knew about design. Eventually, he left the organization and I took over many aspects of his job.

After getting married and having a child, I started my business, AngelArts. I managed to find used Macs and have quite a collection of them now, including the forerunner to the iPad, a little tablet called the Apple Newton!

But even though I am a Mac nut, I do not own an iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I do want an iPhone soon, though, and I know an iPad would greatly help my high-functioning autistic son.

Steve Jobs is truly an inspiration. He started this company in his garage and through his vision turned it into one of the largest companies in the US.

His life teaches us that you have got to believe in yourself and work hard to achieve it. Jobs has had a huge impact on the whole world. He has had a huge impact on my life! We are all better off because of this tremendous visionary!

Rest in peace, Steve! My heart goes out to his family and my prayers and thoughts are with them!

Be Uplifted by this Poem for Patriot Day!

My thoughts are on the 10th Anniversary of 9-11. I will never forget that day. It’s been a special weekend of rememberance with a festival yesterday to honor our service men and women and a moving presentation in church.

I would like to share with you today with a special poem I wrote to commemorate this day. It includes paintings by my son and photographs I took from a hot air balloon on a beautiful September morning in 2007, my prize for winning a logo contest.

Make Money Immediately with Your Brand–Make a Plan and Stick to It!

Making money. It’s why we’re in business, right? And don’t we want it immediately?!

Well, here’s my second idea for making money immediately with your brand: Make a plan and stick to it. Get your name in front of people everyday, whether online or offline.

Choose three or four online methods, like article marketing, video marketing, pay per click advertising, social media marketing, banner advertising. Decide on the frequency you will engage in these activities. Make a daily, weekly, and monthly blueprint of these activities.

Another important tip: track your marketing, especially ads! I recently did a banner ad campaign and loved that I could create tracking codes for each link. Next time I do banner advertising, I will know which websites to display my ads in and which ones to avoid! I will also do a spreadsheet. This will really help my efforts. I have a spreadsheet for all my content and it really helps me keep track of my marketing.

What about offline marketing? Create marketing materials and pass them out on a regular basis. One simple idea is to tuck business cards in books your target market reads at bookstores! Where is your target market in your geographical area? Be involved and be prepared to share your business and ALWAYS carry around your professional business cards!

You will be building brand recognition and your bottom line will be improved a ton sooner if you do nothing!
