Re-Branding Case Study–How Changing the Branding for a Homeschooling Group Brought Me Success

oldexplorerad
My first attempt at promoting an adventure club.

A few years ago, I started a homeschooling co-op specifically for others who were using the same curriculum we use, which is called KONOS. I made flyers and handed them out at our homeschooling support group. I gave them out at homeschooling fairs. I sent emails.

Finally, after a lot of work, I got two other mothers to sign up. As it turned out, it was a disaster. The co-op failed. Later, I tried to make it an adventure club. I got absolutely no interest, at least no one committed to coming.

A year or so later, I got an idea to re-brand it. I decided to call it Explorers Creativity Club. I found appealing artwork and created a logo. I honed the message of the club. I made it a monthly enrichment club where parents could come when they wanted to. There was no long-term commitment.

Although I still used the same curriculum, I just did the activities. Things like exploding volcanoes and going on scavenger hunts. No class time, no lectures, just creative fun. A time for parents and children to explore, have fun, and make new friends.

The re-branded look has brought incredible results!

The result? The response has been off the roof! From the start, I had tremendous interest and last year I hosted around 10 meetings, met a ton of people, and we all had a blast. Last week was my first event for the school year and I had seven kids. And the best result of all, my son made a new friend.

So what made the difference in this endeavor? Re-branding! I completely changed the scope, artwork, and messaging of my monthly get-togethers and the result was resounding success!

This may be the answer you need for a product or service that you have that you feel has flopped. Take it out, look at it with fresh eyes, and brainstorm on how you can re-brand it.

You never know: you may have a winner on your hands!

Communicating Your Brand–How to Avoid Costly Mistakes that Will Chase Away Your Customers

Talk timeYou communicate your brand from the first moment a prospect views your website, walks into your store, or hears a phone greeting.

So what are you communicating? Is it positive? Is it professional? If it’s not, you will chase away your customers and this will cost you!

What can you do to attract rather than repel customers?

Here’s some ideas you might consider. Some of it might seem obvious, but believe me there are business owners who have no clue about this!

1) Have a separate business line. On that business line, record a greeting stating your name, company name, and ask to leave a message.

Can’t afford a separate business line yet? Sign up for Google Voice and get your own phone number. You can forward this to any phone, even your cell. Or get Magic Jack. This Internet-based phone will cost around $70 for equipment plus about $21 per year. All the bells and whistles are included, except call forwarding.

Why is this important? If you hand out your business card and a prospective client tries to call and they get an unprofessional greeting or one that is clearly a home, it will confuse them. You will lose credibility and trust. Your prospect will throw away your business card and never try to reach you again. This reflects poorly on your brand and you will chase them away. This will cost you money!

2) On your Facebook profile page, in the About section and near the cover photo, include as much relevant information as possible. Let people know who you are. Include a link to your Facebook page or website so prospects can easily find you. Include this both on the About page and on the Timeline cover. On your Facebook pages, make sure you have a link to your website near your profile picture.

3) Be consistent in your imagery. The artwork and photos should be similar on your business cards, on your website, Facebook pages, ezines, etc. This gives your prospect a sense that you are credible and trustworthy and makes them feel comfortable that you are who they are looking for.

4) These days, with spam, there is much debate about displaying your telephone and email address prominently on your website. Personally, I think it’s worth the risk. I want my customers to know that I am easily reachable if they have a question. I want it to be convenient for them. This lets them know I am a real person, not a scam.

Additionally, I like to use a widget from vCita.com that encourages prospects to reach me if they wish to. It’s a popup that makes it very easy for them to reach me.

5) In your store or at a show, you want to be friendly and helpful. Don’t ignore customers. Of course, you don’t want to be breathing down their necks, but remember that excellent customer service speaks well of your brand. It puts your brand in a positive light. Especially at a vendor fair, it is amazing to me how many business owners act completely disinterested when a prospect walks by their booth.

6) Additionally, if you have a brick and mortar store, good signage is absolutely essential. If you don’t have your store clearly marked with signage consistent with your brand, you will confuse your prospects. And they will walk away!

Remember the purpose of your brand is to show your business in the best positive light. This is more than an image or a logo. It’s showing up to serve your customer. It’s creating a pleasant experience for your prospect that helps them to trust you and proves to them you are credible.

Do this and your brand will sizzle and your future will dazzle!

Branding in Marketing–5 Steps to Make Your Brand Marketing Soar Above the Competition

IMG_0073With the advent of Internet Marketing, branding in marketing is absolutely essential and not just for big corporations anymore. At best, you have 10 seconds to get your prospect to click on your image.

Is your brand attracting the kind of attention you want or does your brand leave your traffic snoozing because it looks indistinguishable from every other brand out there?

If your brand is less than exciting, don’t worry. I’m going to share with you five steps that will help your company brand soar above the competition.

5 Steps to Make Your Brand Marketing Soar Above the Competition

Step 1) Make sure your brand represents the essence of who you are.

Your brand should accurately reflect your company’s reason for existence. Call this your mission, your vision, your Unique Selling Proposition.

Whatever you call it, the more clarity you have on why you are in business, the more your brand will accurately portray the essence of who you are as a company.

The result? You will increase your name recognition and brand awareness. If who you are is reflected accurately in your business image, your prospects will be naturally attracted to your brand and ultimately the products or services you are offering, which will increase your bottom line. Further, congruence between image and essence translates to customer trust and loyalty.

In other words, your brand delivers what you promise. When your brand does not accurately reflect your business, your prospects may feel jipped. LIke you overpromised and underdelivered. You do not want your brand reflecting this bad business modus operandi!

Step 2) Make sure your brand is specifically tailored to your target market.

When you aim at nothing, you will hit nothing. You need to completely understand the customers or clients you are trying to reach. The more detailed description you have of your ideal client, the better your brand will be, the more magnetic your brand will be.

You cannot be all things to all people. That is impossible. Instead, find your niche and research this niche thoroughly.

Don’t know where to start? Often, the best place to start is an audience for whom you have an affinity. One that you can relate to.

Are you a mother? Then market to moms!

Are you passionate about real estate? Market to fellow realtors!

Do you love animals? Then market to fellow animal lovers!

I think you get the idea. Whatever market you choose, outline specific details like education level, geographic location, gender, marital status, income level, interests, etc.

Keep this in mind when developing your brand. If you need to, cut out a picture that encapsulates your target market and stick it to your computer monitor. Never forget WHO you are in business for!

Because when you remember your target audience in your branding, your marketing is more effective. You will reach the specific people who are interested in your product or service and your profits will soar!

Step 3) Make sure your brand does not come across as amateurish.

Do it yourself logos and “custom” designs are a dime a dozen. But buyer beware! A cookie cutter logo may not do your company justice! And it may look, in fact, amateurish.

When your brand does not come across as professional, it shows to your prospects that you do not treat your business seriously. And if you do not treat your business seriously, then what does that mean about your product or service and the customer service that comes with that product or service?

A cheap brand comes across as just that–cheap. And cheap brands are indistinguishable from the competition, which means your brand gets left in the dust.

Don’t let that happen to you. If you want to design your logo yourself or buy a stock logo, at least do research on what makes an effective image and what makes a cheap image. Do your homework and your brand will soar above the competition!

Step 4) Make sure you include a photograph of yourself in your branding to convey trust.

Today’s marketing is relational. The Internet is vastly anonymous and your prospects are scared of scams. Your prospects may also be tired of corporations “running the show” and prefer to work with someone real, down to earth.

Including a photograph of yourself with your brand will help build trust with your prospects.

But make sure it is a good photograph! It may be worth the investment to hire a professional photographer. If you decide not to hire a photographer, at least make sure you find a person you trust to take your photograph.

Like a logo, a cheap photograph translates to a worthless product or service. Your customers will not be drawn to your page and you will be again left in the dust behind your competition.

Step 5) Make sure you apply your brand consistently across all mediums.

Applying your brand consistently or the same to your business cards to your website to your email marketing to your social marketing will increase your brand awareness and name recognition.

You want your prospect, when they click on a banner to your website, to instantly be able to recognize your page as the same entity.

Or when a prospect clicks on your landing page for your ezine offer, you want that ezine to have consistent branding with that web page. Otherwise, your new subscriber will unsubscribe you because they don’t remember you!

Remember, it takes at least seven exposures of a product or service to make a sale. So building a consistent brand across all mediums is building a brand awareness that will result in more leads and more sales. It is also building trust. It shows your prospect that you are serious about your business and they can depend on your product or service to solve their particular problem. And when your prospect feels like you can solve their problems, your profits will soar and your competition be left in the dust!

Practice these steps above and you will find that your prospects aren’t snoozing anymore at your images, but instead, your brand sizzles, soaring above your competition and resulting in a better bottom line!

Branding Yourself–7 Tips to Help You Stand Out Above the Crowd

In this Internet age, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. How can you stand out with your prospects?

Here’s some ideas to help you!

  1. Send your customers branded birthday cards, promotional products, and thank you gifts. This will keep you top of mind and show that you care!
  2. Set up a domain for your business as well as your name. Use keywords as part of your domain.
  3. Use domain email: your name@yourbusiness.com. Yahoo, gmail, and other free services are unprofessional and will decrease your credibility.
  4. Send your own branded thank you cards as a follow-up to customers.
  5. Create your own company logo wear and advertise your business when you are going around town!
  6. Compose an elevator pitch to tell people what you do and how you can help them. Practice it until you have it memorized!
  7. Without vision people perish! Spend some time thinking through your life and business vision, mission, and values! Then translate it into business plans, marketing plans, and most importantly, your calendar!

Business Success–Keep on Swimming in the Face of Challenges

Somehow while I was thinking of a title for this blog entry, I had a picture of Dory from the movie Finding Nemo. She kept on swimming in the face of huge obstacles.

I’ve felt like Dory a lot lately. Like I’m swimming against the tide. Exhaustion and confusion sweeps over me and I become lost.

That’s the realization I’ve made. I’ve got to keep on swimming no matter what.

And like Dory I will find success.

Because quitters don’t win prizes. Giving in to defeat is not an option. I may toy with the idea for an hour or a day, but I always come back to this truth:

Success in life is found in the intersection of persistence and desire.

I found that idea today while reading Napolean Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. You see, before I picked up the book and started reading, I wanted to give up in defeat. I felt useless, worthless and like all my efforts of late are futile.

Frustrated, I decided to rest and eventually I picked up the Napolean Hill book and started reading. It immediately caught my attention because it talked about not giving up when you feel defeated.

He told this incredible story of a miner who gave up his dreams of striking it rich after not finding anymore gold in the vein he was working. If he had dug a few feet deeper, he would have struck gold beyond his wildest imaginings!

The man who bought all the miner’squipment found this out because he got the knowledge necessary to become wildly successful!

So the lesson to me: I’ve got to keep on digging. Or, like Dory, keep on swimming!

Design Portfolio–A Dance Flyer that Is Just Fun!

On Saturdays, I am instituting a new feature. Each week I will display an item from my portfolio!

Today’s item is a dance flyer I did for a local dance studio:

I did this in Photoshop, using a picture my client had. I used the filter feature to make it into a painting, then chose fun and flirty fonts that went with the theme. I chose an orange and yellow blend to give it pizazz.

The client was very pleased! It was a fun project to do!

Software that Will Propel Your Business to New Heights!

Okay, so I admit it! I am a software junkie! One of my favorite pastimes is looking at the App Store on my computer.

But software can be very expensive, especially professional programs.

What software do you really need to have to propel your business to new heights and how can you obtain it without costing an arm and a leg?

Well, let me tell you a few ideas I’ve gathered through experience as a software junkie!

Here is one you absolutely must have!

Financial software

I know this is obvious, but it may not be as obvious as you think. After all, some people are still operating in the stone age of ledgers done by hand. I know my husband’s boss does this! Every year, we wait while he prepares the W-2s by hand!

When I first worked for The Navigators as a graphic designer, I was amazed that all the records were kept the old fashioned way! It was one of my first big projects–to create a financial system for our internal ad agency!

These days, there are many options available. The industry standard is Quickbooks. Peachtree or Sage is another outstanding product. AccountEdge is an excellent program made for Macs. Excel or Numbers is extremely helpful for business expenses and income. I love how they have templates so it’s easy to create what I need!

If you are a freelance artist or a contractor, you will want software that includes estimates or quotes. A built in database of your customers is very important, too.

There is also software for keeping track of cash flow. This is very important, both in your business and personal life. Many of these software programs help you keep track of cash flow, as well as help you keep and maintain a budget.

You can also get apps for your smart phone or tablet. This is very handy to have, especially if your business is mobile. You just need to make sure you are disciplined enough to use it!

The best software is one that you will use on a consistent basis. You want to set up a system so that keeping up with your books is automatic.

I like to keep it simple, and for that reason I use iBank. It directly correlates my business expenses with the tax code. It also has an app for my iPhone so I can make entries on the fly and then sync it with my desktop. I try to download entries from my online banking service at least once a week.

This is tedious work, so often I will watch Netflix while I catch up with my banking!

Robust reporting is extremely important. I have mine set up where every quarter I can press a few buttons and presto–I am ready to create my sales tax returns!

Plus, I love that I can attach receipts to each transaction. My goal is to be completely paperless so I don’t have to worry about stacks of paper being buried on my desk!

But where do you get this software? It can be as simple as going to OfficeDepot. The Internet is full of accounting software that you can directly download. Or if you want to get an older version to save money, you can always find something on eBay or Craigslist. But be careful! You don’t want to end up with a pirated copy!

If you use a bookkeeper or tax accountant, these programs make it very easy to share your numbers so returns can be produced.

Every year, I print out a summary of our income and expenses and we give it to our CPA. I put the receipts and statements and pertinent tax information in an expandable, portable file, labeled by category. That way, if he has any questions, I can just pull a receipt out.

If you have employees, you may want to consider hiring a staffing administrative services company. I can’t imagine the complications of having to keep the books in that scenario!

The Bible says to “know well the conditions of your herd.” I think in today’s terms, that means we need to know what we’re spending and where our income is coming from. It means we need to keep accurate records of our inventory.

After all, we as business owners are stewards. Be faithful in a little, and you will be given responsibility for more! If you are not faithful in this area, could it be that is why you are experiencing roadblocks to your success?

Financial accounting is not something I am naturally good at. Learning how to use financial software has helped me grow in this area tremendously. It’s something I strive to get better at every day!

Because I want my brand to sizzle and my future to dazzle! How about you?

Struggling? Here are 3 Steps to a Dazzling Future

It seems like in this world, many are experiencing hard times, whether financially, emotionally, spiritually, or physically.

Software that Will Propel Your Business to New Heights–Photoshop!

Awhile back I suggested that the number one software you should have in your business arsenal is financial software.

Here is the one for today’s post:

Image manipulation software

First of all, what is this? Image manipulation software allows you to crop, size, format, and enhance photographs and artwork.

Why does a business owner need this?

Because of the Internet presence you need to have.

Face it, the Yellow Pages are dead. So how are you going to let your customers and prospects know about you?

Some key resources may be a WordPress site, your Facebook profile, LinkedIn, Twitter… these are just some of the sites available to help you spread the word about your products and services.

Images sell. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. On the Internet, you need to make banners, profile badges, avatars… you name it.

But how do you do it?

Through image manipulation software.

My number one recommendation? Adobe Photoshop.

This is hands-down the best software out there. But understandably, It may be out of your price range. One of the best affordable software programs out there is Adobe Photoshop Elements. This is more of a consumer-level program and works just fine for web purposes.

Want a program for free? You can try Gimp.com or picmonkey.com.

There are actually many photo manipulation programs available. Just Google it if you want to find out more.

Don’t want to mess with image manipulation software? Then you may want to hire a graphic designer. This is especially important for images like book covers and logos. If you are not a designer with thousands of hours of experience, there is no way you can objectively and effectively design a cover or logo that is up to professional standards.

Art is very subjective. You may look at your logo or cover and think that it is wonderful. But the truth is, it doesn’t matter what you think. What matters is that it gets the response you want and need to make your project a success. To ultimately increase your bottom line.

If your logo or cover is not professionally done, then your prospects will know that you do not take your business seriously. They may ignore you entirely. How can they expect you to treat them as customers seriously? This may cause a disconnect of trust and credibility and result in ultimately lower profits.

I see this attitude all the time. At one networking meeting, a marketing director showed me her card with a great deal of frustration on her face. I looked at it and blinked several times. What did it mean? What did this company do? I had no idea from the logo. It was confusing and the marketing director was having a very hard time explaining the services of this company to prospects.

The owner, though, was “married” to the logo. He had come up with it himself and because of that he was fond of it.

But he had not done any market analysis to see if the logo resonated with anyone else or what kind of message he was trying to convey! He had no idea what his marketing objectives were when he created the image.

So whether you do it yourself through image manipulation software or hire it out to a professional, you need to stay consistent with your branding. And you need to know graphic design standards. You also need to understand how marketing objectives and analysis ties in to key decisions when designing images. If you don’t have a brand, you need to start the process of getting one!

But branding is just that–a process that requires thorough analysis. It’s not just a matter of putting a pretty logo or book cover up!

You may want to find some image software. And if you want to try Photoshop, they have a free 60 day trial! And not only that, you can get it their cloud service for around $20 per month!

Learn image manipulation software with graphic design standards and your brand will sizzle and your future will dazzle!

My branding tutorial course includes a whole bonus lesson on software and my online program includes several instructional videos in Photoshop as I show you how to create a logo.
